Person Rescued Following Fire In Flat

Trelawney Road, Helston at 29/08/2005 02:09

2 appliances from Helston were mobilised following a report from a neighbour of a smoke alarm actuating. On arrival the crews found a smoke logged first floor flat with a report that someone was inside. An appliance from Mullion was then mobilised along with ambulance and police. One person and 2 dogs were rescued by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and a cooker fire was extinguished using one hosereel. Oxygen was administered to the casualty by the crew's trained co-responders until the arrival of ambulance personnel.

The smoke alarm in this flat undoubtedly saved this persons life, by alerting a neighbour who then dialled 999 and called out the Fire Brigade.

If you do not have a working smoke alarm, they may be purchased at DIY stores, hardware and electrical shops, supermarkets and convenience stores. They can be bought for less than £5. If advice is needed where they should be sited and the type that should be bought then please call the Fire Safety Helpline on 0800 3581 999. The call is free. Alternatively, the Brigade has more information available on it's Internet Website at http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/fire/fsafety/fs01.htm
