Beverley Hughes, Minister of State for Children, Young People and Families will be visiting the South West on Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 October 2005. During her visit she will have the opportunity to meet people providing and benefiting from a range of services for children, young people and families. You are invited to send a representative to the following venues:

Tuesday 4 October
12.45 - Cornwall College, Saltash, for the official opening of the new £1.6m Tavy Building. This facility will provide a new learning resource and study area for childcare students at the college. Known for its innovative approach to training, the College runs a community centre for Saltash offering a number of services including a Mother and Toddler Group. The Minister will attend a Teddy Bears Picnic at 1pm and meet staff, students and children. For further details, contact Georgina Dale, Cornwall College 01726 226 553.


14.20 – Estover Community College, Miller Way, Plymouth PL6 8UN to tour the school
and learn about its experience of becoming an extended school. She will also visit the Soundhouse Project at the College which gives children, young people and adults access to music and the performing arts. For further details, contact Graham Browne 01752 207907.


Wednesday 5 October

09.45 – Official opening of Sure Start Bideford Children’s Centre, Victoria Park, Bideford.
The Centre houses a range of services for families with children up to 5, providing a one-stop shop for parents and children, with advice and services on all aspects of childcare and bringing up children – from health and education to childcare.

12.30 – Visit to Cornwall Fire Service, Flashpoint Life Skills Centre, Walker Lines Industrial Estate, Bodmin to learn more about their work with young people, providing skills and motivation to achieve. This includes the Pheonix Project run for 11-16 year olds who are underachieving at school. They spend a week learning the skills of the fire fighters and community safety. The project has been successful in helping young people achieve their potential. There is also a course for young parents.

During her two day visit the Minister will also be meeting with representatives of the Devon Pathfinder Children’s Trust and Bodmin SHARE Information and Advice service for young people, run by the Cornwall Youth Service.
