The first of two fire appliances from Bodmin Community Fire Station was in attendance two minutes from the time of the first of several calls reporting a fire in a building with persons reported trapped. A fire appliance from Liskeard Community Fire Station was also sent to support the Bodmin crews.
The fire was located in a second floor flat of a building measuring 20 metres by 10 metres. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using two hosereel jets entered the building to carry out a search for people and to extinguish the fire. The search confirmed that no people were inside the flat, which was confirmed when the occupants returned, after the crews had been at the scene for about 15 minutes. The fire was brought under control by 1520hrs and the firefighters used a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear the smoke.
Update 1645hrs: One fire appliance from Bodmin remains at the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
