Bonfire Out of Control / Residential Fire

Penair View, Truro at 31/05/2020 10:19

Around 10:19 Critical Control began to receive multiple 999 calls reporting a fire in Penair View, Truro. Some callers reported it was a shed on fire, some reported a bonfire had got out of control and others reported a fire was spreading to a dwelling. Two callers also mentioned petrol was stored in a shed on fire.

As at least one caller reported a dwelling on fire, we initially mobilised two appliances from Truro Community Fire Station and one wholetime Station Manager. On arrival the first crew requested urgent assistance from a third appliance, and then moments later a fourth appliance was requested. Control mobilised one appliance from Falmouth and one appliance from Tolvaddon. As both are 24 hour stations, on-call firefighters were called in to both stations to replace the wholetime crews responding to the incident. An Operational Support Vehicle (OSV) from Falmouth, an Incident Command Unit (ICU) from St Just and an additional wholetime Station manager was also mobilised.

The Police and Ambulance Service were informed of the incident. Both are informed of all fire service incidents of 4 pumps and over.

The fire involved a single story dwelling measuring 15m x 4m and had spread from a shed to the roof of the dwelling. Initially crews used one main jet and two hose reel jets to try to bring the fire under control. A small quantity of camping gas cylinders were involved and were being cooled externally.

A further assistance message was received requesting an Aerial Ladder Platform, which was mobilised from Newquay. Shortly after this the Incident Commander requested urgent police assistance to prevent persons trying to re-enter the property and obstructing firefighting operations.

The fire was finally extinguished at 13:40. Crews re-visted the property twice in the afternoon to check for signs of re-ignition. The cause was accidental and the fire spread from the source of origin.
