Cornwall County Fire Brigade Recycle Effective Communication

at 19/06/2006 12:27

Cornwall County Fire Brigade has donated 50 motorola radios, 3 chargers and 22 single chargers to St Johns Ambulance to assist in their communication at stadium events.

The radios were handed over to Assistant Commissioner – Operational Services Simon Eglinton from St Johns Ambulance by Assistant Chief Fire Officer Ted Simpson at St Austell Fire Station this week.

The radios are no longer needed by the Brigade as their current radio scheme has been upgraded. Following the Boscastle flooding and the snow on the A30 it was determined that firefighters needed a new system in order to communicate with their colleagues and other emergency services effectively.

“As soon as our new radio scheme was up and running we look at how we could recycle the old radios and chargers. We are delighted that St Johns Ambulance can extend their life and that they will continue to work in an environment that cares for its community and can potentially save lives” said Assistant Chief Officer Ted Simpson.

“The new radios are going to be used for communication at stadium events because the frequency will be more reliable and efficient in places with large reinforced structures” said Simon Eglinton, St Johns Ambulance
He cont: “This will include football and rugby matches and concerts at the Hall for Cornwall”

Cornwall County Fire Brigade has a long association with St Johns Ambulance including training together and working together at incidents and events.

The radios are UHF (ultra high frequency) and are particularly effective at penetrating blind spots. They have already been reprogrammed and cleaned for St Johns Ambulance.
