The Brigade has attended several calls this evening to bonfires that looked like they were out of control or neighbours were concerned that they may set fire to surrounding property.
Those wishing to have a bonfire are advised to take a few precautions:
Do not build your bonfire too high. It is better to burn small amounts which are more easily controlled than have one very big bonfire. Keep combustible materials well away from the bonfire to prevent them becoming involved.
The smell and smoke from a bonfire often causes a nuisance for neighbours. Be considerate. Consider alternative means of disposing of the waste, such as shredding to use as mulch, composting or your local council may have a garden waste collection scheme.
Have adequate means of extinguishing the fire, should it get out of hand or become a nuisance to neighbours. Buckets of water, a hose or earth can be used.
Have a means of contacting the fire brigade should it get out of control and you need assistance.
To avoid the unnecessary attendance of the Fire Brigade, advise Fire Control, on 01872 320205, when you are about to light the fire, giving your name, location of the fire and a telephone contact number.
Please BE SAFE.
