Child victims of the terrible Chernobyl reactor fire and explosion in 1986 are being entertained for the fourth year by firefighters and staff at Cornwall County Fire Brigade.

Members of staff have voluntarily given up their time to organise the visits and days of fun packed activities. Fourteen children, nine girls and five boys, will be visiting three fire stations and three tourist attractions during their time with the Brigade.

The children have been brought to England by the registered charity Chernobyl Lifeline, which was started to help those children whose lives have been devastated by the effects of contamination following the Chernobyl fire.

Sub Officer Phil Cooper explains: “Firefighters and staff at Cornwall County Fire Brigade are happy to dedicate their time to organising enjoyable days for the Chernobyl Children. It is extremely rewarding; the food, drinking water and fresh air we provide boosts their immune systems”
This year the fourteen children will have an early morning ride on Padstow speedboats, visit Crealy Adventure Park and then arrive back at Bodmin Fire Station for a barbeque on 1 August. On 7 August they will spend the day at Eden Project then head back to St Austell Fire Station for food and games. The last visit is to Flambards followed by another barbeque at Falmouth Fire Station.

Executive Member for Public Protection Ken Yeo added: “All of the attractions have kindly continued their support and hospitality again this year. We appreciate their assistance and for helping us to put a smile on the children’s faces!”
