Students from Hayle Community School will be taking part in the Hayle Safe Flaming Sports Challenge on Wednesday 2 August at 3.30pm.
Cornwall County Fire Brigade and Devon and Cornwall Constabulary have organised the five-a-side football match for all students at the school.
This is the third Hayle Safe Flaming Sports Challenge event. In March a 7-a-side tag rugby tournament involving local primary school children took place at the Rugby Club. Last August the Hayle Safe Team held a five-a-side football tournament. This proved to be extremely popular with the students from Hayle Community College.
“The students really enjoyed the football match last year, and so did everyone else involved. It gave us a fantastic opportunity to create a positive relationship between the emergency services and the students. Holding another event this year allows us to sustain and build on this” said Sub Officer Steve Benney
Leading Firefighter John Navin added: “At the end of the event their will be an awards ceremony where the winners will receive trophies and shields from the Mayor of Hayle Paul Birch”
Each team of five will be assisted by a volunteer from Cornwall County Fire Brigade or Devon and Cornwall Constabulary.
The Mayor of Hayle Paul Birch said: “Last year the fire brigade and the police worked hard to induce a positive relationship between them and the students of Hayle Community School. The response they had to the challenge was extremely positive and this can be seen in how many students are taking part this year”
Sergeant Simon Dobson, Devon and Cornwall Constabulary said: “The HayleSafe Flaming Sports Challenge is obviously thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and helps them stay healthy!”
Executive Member for Public Protection Councillor Ken Yeo added: “The HayleSafe Flaming Sports Challenge is one facet of the work firefighters John and Steve have been conducting in the Hayle area since 2004. The HayleSafe project team aim to improve the quality of life and promote safety and healthy living”
The event has been funded by Cornwall County Fire Brigade and supported by Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, Hayle Town Council and Cornwall County Council.
