7pm – 9pm on Monday 9 October 2006 at St Austell Fire Station, Carlyon Road, St Austell

Do you enjoy new challenges? Do you have a spirit of adventure and want to develop leadership qualities? Are you aged between 13 – 15 years? Then why not become a fire cadet?

St Austell Fire Station is inviting everyone that is interested in becoming a fire cadet to the station for an open evening on Monday 9 October 2006. The station has had a cadet group for four years and is now looking to recruit more cadets to continue its successful programme.

The cadet scheme started in Cornwall during 1996 with the first branch opening at Newquay Fire Station. Due to the popularity of the group cadets were then recruited at Bude Fire Station, Bodmin Fire Station and Saltash Station. All cadets are recruited from school year eight (12/13 year olds) and are immediately inducted into fire service life. The primary objectives for Cornwall County Fire Brigade Cadet Scheme are:

• To recruit young people and afford them the opportunity of joining a uniformed organisation
• To assist in each member’s development, both mentally and physically; promoting self discipline, social consciousness and community awareness.
• To foster a spirit of adventure and develop qualities of leadership
• To ensure the health, safety and welfare of members whilst in the care of Cornwall County Fire Brigade
Sarah Webber, Cadet Instructor explained: “The cadets take part in many activities including fire service drills appropriate to their age and experience, first aid and fire safety, They can also work towards a BTEC Qualification in firefighting skills”

She cont: “Each cadet is provided with a uniform, very similar to that worn by Cornwall’s firefighters. The cadets at St Austell meet once a week on a Monday evening from 7 – 9pm. All of the instructors are qualified to work with young people”.

The running cost of the scheme is borne by each branch via fund raising and sponsorship. Much of the funds are raised through the local community and businesses with all instructors, who are both uniformed and non-uniformed members of the Brigade, giving their time freely.
