Tyre Fire

United Downs Industrial Park, St Day, Redruth at 25/01/2007 14:30

Firefighters from Redruth, Camborne and Falmouth as well as the specialist communication vehicle from Truro and the Support Unit from Falmouth were called to a fire involving large commercial tyres last night.
The fire was close to two buildings, one of which contained oxyacetylene cylinders. Fortunately Cornwall County Fire Brigade were aware of the contents of the building and the correct way in which to deal with them.
The cylinders were cooled by firefighters as a precautionary measure. A 200 metre cordoned off area was set up for safety.
Firefighters removed surplus tyres and used a thermal imaging camera to check for heat.
Wearing breathing apparatus and using two hose reels they worked hard to quickly extinguish the fire.
Firefighters remained overnight and during the morning, to continue to keep the cylinders cooled. An exclusion zone remained for safety.
The incident was finally finished at approximately 14.30 hours when the final appliance returned to its home station.
