Cadets from Saltash Fire Station are extremely pleased to receive £500 from a local sponsor, Colin Worden from Mortgage Money.
The money will go towards the cadet’s trip to Sweden in July where they will take part in the European Fire Cadet Championships. Colin has been an avid supporter of the cadets and to date has donated £3000 towards the trip.
The cadet scheme started in Cornwall during 1996 with the first branch opening at Newquay Fire Station. Due to the popularity of the scheme cadets were then recruited at Bude Fire Station, Bodmin Fire Station Saltash in 2004 followed by Polruan in 2006. All cadets are recruited from school year 8 (12/13 year olds) and the primary objectives for Cornwall County Fire Brigade Cadet Scheme are:
• To recruit young people and afford them the opportunity of joining a uniformed organisation
• To assist in each members development, both mentally and physically. Whilst promoting self discipline, social consciousness and community awareness.
• To foster a spirit of adventure and develop qualities of leadership
• To ensure the health, safety and welfare of members whilst in the care of Cornwall County Fire Brigade
“The running cost for each fire cadet group is met through fund raising and sponsorship with the cadet leaders giving up their time for free” said Darren Berrey, Saltash Fire Cadet Leader
“We have sixteen cadets and three instructors travelling to Sweden in July. We have been trying to raise as much money as possible towards the trip and have been bag packing at local supermarkets every weekend. Colin Worden’s generous sponsorship is much appreciated by everybody at the station”
