Rugby players and swimmers from Cornwall County Fire Brigade were invited to a presentation evening at New County Hall in honour of their sporting achievements this year.

The Chairman of Cornwall County Council Mrs Doris Ansari invited the sports men and women to join her and Vice Lord Lieutenant Mr Galsworthy for the evening and presented them with trophies to mark the occasion.

“Cornwall Fire Brigade’s rugby players became national champions after beating Hertfordshire in the finals of the English Fire Service National Knockout Championship at Taunton RFC on Wednesday 4 April 2007. They earned their place following victories over Somerset, Avon, Devon and defeating Royal Berkshire in the Southern Final” said Chair of the South West Fire Service Sports and Athletic Association Ted Simpson

On 2 June Cornwall County Fire Brigade hosted the Fire Service Sports and Athletic Association (FSSAA) National Swimming Championships at Truro Leisure Centre. Apart from a number of individual wins, Samantha Morris won the Ladies Masters title and the team won the Masters Title and the Overall National Champions title.

“I invited the teams to New County Hall so I could offer them my personal congratulations, they must be very proud of their achievements. Not only did the rugby players win the England National Final but they helped to promote Cornwall outside of the county by becoming team of the month in a national magazine” said Chairman of Cornwall County Council Mrs Doris Ansari
Mrs Ansari cont: “This was the first time the Cornish swimming team has won the overall National Title. Congratulations to all that took part and thank you to those who helped organise the events”

Vice Lord Lieutenant Mr Galsworthy said: “What the teams have achieved is outstanding. The rugby team will be celebrating their 50th season this year, and already have nine inscriptions on the national trophy. I am delighted for you individually and of course equally for Cornwall Fire Brigade – a true beacon of excellence”

Also attending the evening was Chief Fire Officer Matt Littmoden; “Cornwall is such a small brigade in comparison to many of the other fire and rescue services taking part in these sporting events. To run away with two national titles shows how truly special our teams are. I am very proud of their achievements”
The Cornish Rugby Team included: Captain Dave Moyle, Ross Ford, Will Hancock, Darren Rowe, Richard Spear, John Navin, Louis Stevens, James Jago, Phil Craven, James Tresize, Stewart Whitworth, Gary Rich, Dave Coombes, Rob Jose, Tony Penrose, Timmy Gay, Jon Smeadon, Wayne Jenkin, Jamie Hollow, Gavin Takel, Greg Rogers, James Allen, Danny Fitzpatrick, Ian Bramley, Richard Gibbons, James Collins, Stuart Turnbull, Matt Riches, Matt Worthington, Mark Boeck (Manager), Colin Hatch (Chairman) and Colin Coombes (First Aid).
