Firefighters Respond To Arson Attacks

at 31/08/2007 17:00

Firefighters from Truro, Falmouth and Perranporth have been called to three different arson attacks in the last three days.

The first fire was at Poltair Meadow, Penryn on 29 August at 12.10am. Two fire engines from Falmouth were called and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus quickly extinguished the fire confined to the ground floor.

“Once the firefighters had extinguished the fire they used fans to ventilate the property. After an investigation the cause of the fire was deemed to be suspicious and the police were called to assist” said Assistant Divisional Officer Mark Hewitt

The second fire was at Malpas Road, Truro on 30 August at 1.48am. Two fire engines from Truro and Falmouth were called to the fire in a porta-cabin on the site of the Cornish Homes development site. The firefighters extinguished the fire using two hose reels. The cause of the fire was believed to be arson.

The third fire happened last night at the Cathedral View development, Treffrey Road, Truro. Firefighters from Truro and Perranporth used one hose reel and one jet to extinguish the fire.

Divisional Officer Steve Brown explained: “Unfortunately the fire was already well developed when they arrived and it destroyed the single storey building. Initial investigations showed that the fire had been started deliberately”
A trained fire investigation officer and the arson detection dogs were called to the fires. Fire Investigators have to take into consideration numerous details at every incident they are called to investigate.

Steve Brown added: “Arson is a very serious and potentially life threatening offence. The Brigade has a wealth of fire investigation knowledge and in collaboration with the Police we investigate all suspicious fires. The Police and the courts deal with people suspected of arson in a very serious manner”

Fire Investigators and the Police are currently carrying out a detailed investigation. If anyone has information or witnesses someone acting suspiciously they should ring Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
