Cornwall’s firefighters want you to stay safe this fireworks night by following the firework code, and attending an organised display.
Fireworks are fun, but have the potential to cause harm; they cause hundreds of avoidable injuries every year. Between 2000 and 2005
6,637 people were hurt and required hospital treatment. In the same period there were two deaths. Last year around half of all injuries happened to children under the age of 16 years of age.
“We want people to enjoy fireworks on or around November 5th and advise they go to an organised display”
said Community Safety Officer Dave King
He cont: “If you do decide to host your own display for family, friends or the general public it is important that the utmost care is taken; follow the firework code and don’t set fireworks off after drinking alcohol. For free safety advice about bonfire or firework displays contact 01872 32 3777 or log on www.cornwall.gov.uk/fire”
The Firework Code
1. Only buy fireworks marked BS 7114.
2. Don’t drink alcohol if setting off fireworks.
3. Keep fireworks in a closed box.
4. Follow the instructions on each firework.
5. Light them at arm’s length, using a taper.
6. Stand well back.
7. Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn’t gone off, it could still explode.
8. Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them.
9. Always supervise children around fireworks.
10. Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves.
11. Never give sparklers to a child under five.
12. Keep pets indoors.
13. Don’t let off noisy fireworks after 11pm.
And remember… Fireworks. Be safe not sorry. Always follow the Code.
Falmouth firefighters are holding their annual firework display at Falmouth Cricket Ground, Trescobeas Road, Falmouth on Monday 5 November. The evening starts at 6pm and the proceeds go to the Fire Service National Benevolent Fund and other local charities.
