Raising Money For Chernobyl Children

at 14/12/2007 12:03

Cornwall County Fire Brigade host a group of children from Chernobyl every year. These children have been affected by the Chernobyl disaster and are members of firefighters’ families living in Belarus.

Fire stations across the County organise fun filled days out during the children’s month stay in England.

“We spend the year fundraising and approaching local businesses to get their support. We try to provide them with gifts, vitamins and health supplies that are in poor supply where they live” said Rachel Hoare, Community Fire Safety Advisor.

The children who come over often have medical conditions or are in poor health. Statistics show that one month here eating good healthy food, drinking unpolluted water and breathing clean air can extend their life expectancy by up to three years.

Rachel cont: “Spending time and getting to know these amazing, courageous children is very rewarding, and all those that help feel the project is extremely worthwhile”

At a fundraising event at ASDA in Bodmin the public were asked to enter a competition to win an In-car DVD player, kindly donated by Halfords in Bodmin, who often donate to Bodmin Fire Station’s fundraising events.

Rachel added: “Congratulations to Keenun Crook who is the lucky winner of the DVD player. Well done and thank you for supporting our competition”
