Cornwall’s Ladies Raise Thousands For Fire Service National Benevolent Fund

at 18/03/2008 09:12

Around 200 women from across Cornwall turned up at RAF Portreath on Sunday to attend the Fire Brigade’s 2008 Ladies Driver Challenge, and raised £32,000 into the bargain for the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund. The fund assists serving and former members of the Fire Service and their families, offering support, rest, recuperation and therapy.

“Each person had to raise a minimum of £100 to take part” explained Divisional Officer Mark Boeck.

“In actual fact some participants raised up to £500 and we are over the moon with the final tally of £32,000. Everyone agreed it was a great experience and they can’t wait to do it all again next year!”

The vehicles were set out in five different zones with participants being able to drive all or any of the vehicles:
1. Fire Brigade vehicles
2. Articulated lorries
3. Coaches and buses
4. Miscellaneous – limousines, police car, ambulance, army trucks, armoured vehicle, Green Goddess
5. Plant, tractors, trailers, fork lift trucks

Mark added, “A big thank you has to go out to all the vehicle providers. Without them taking the time, effort and cost of bringing out their vehicles to be used on the day this event couldn’t have happened and this fantastic sum would not have been raised for the FSNBF”.

If any ladies out there like the sound of this year’s event, the Fire Brigade are now taking registrations for the next event which is being staged at RAF Portreath on Sunday, March 29th 2009.
