Firefighters from Penzance Fire Station are organising a free skateboarding competition to be held on 14th June at the Princess May Skate Bowl in Treneere, the second year in a row that this event has been organised.
The ‘Wheels of Fire’ skating event is the brain child of Olly Clark, a firefighter from Penzance’s Green Watch who is also a keen skater.
Olly explains, “The competition aims to bring youth together from the local area, in a positive way. We want young people to be able to show their local communities that they can channel their energy in constructive ways, with a hobby such as skating.”
The competition is part of the Fire Brigade’s ongoing work with communities and young people, such as Phoenix Project and Supporting Community Values.
Ken Yeo, Executive Member for Public Protection adds, “This is yet another example of the innovative way in which individual firefighters and their colleagues work with young people in their local communities. I am always delighted to support these events that are organised by our firefighters in their own time, to show the young people that there are people prepared to work with them and give them a purpose and value in the community.”
The Wheels of Fire skate competition will take place on the 14th June from 10am until 4 pm. Although entry is free, an entry form is required and these are available by contacting Penzance Fire Station on 01736 362918. There will be some great prizes kindly donated by local skate shops, with judging by SJ’z Skate Shop from Truro.
