Cornwall County Fire Brigade has confirmed that a new Aerial Ladder Platform (ALP) is to be purchased at a cost of £450,000, with an expected delivery time of 9-12 months.
The decision follows an in depth review and consideration of several options to bolster the ALP capability in Cornwall, including the option to outsource the provision of a replacement vehicle when required.
Chief Fire Officer Matt Littmoden says, “We have made progress with a potential provider to outsource ALP cover, but we still have some work to do on the fine detail. Having said this, progress in formulating a suitable arrangement appears to be moving in a positive direction.
“However, further consideration of the options has led me to decide that the purchase of a new appliance is necessary and should not be delayed whilst the outsourcing option is further evaluated.”
Purchase of an additional appliance will allow for three aerial appliances to provide cover during normal circumstances and would significantly reduce the chances of all aerial appliances within the County not being available. The Brigade is currently considering where the new ALP will be stationed.
It is proposed that the work on scoping the cost of the outsourcing option should continue to determine whether it would provide a cost effective measure to supplement the increase in the fleet.
