Firefighters from St Dennis and St Columb were mobilised to a report of a chip pan fire. Fortunately, a neighbour had extinguished the fire using a damp cloth so the firefighters from St Dennis ventilated the property and inspected to ensure the scene was left safe.
The neighbour undoubtedly prevented the fire from spreading and causing a lot more damage.
General Fire Safety Advice: Chip Pan Fires
THROW AWAY your chip pan and use a deep fat fryer. Better still try oven chips.
If you must use a chip pan and it catches fire, remember:
NEVER move a burning chip pan.
NEVER pour water on a burning chip pan.
IF SAFE TO DO SO cover a burning chip pan with a fire blanket or damp cloth, holding it in front to protect you. Turn off the heat under the pan (if it's safe to do so) and allow it to cool completely. This will take at least 30 minutes, probably longer.
IF YOU DO NOT FEEL ABLE to safely cover the chip pan with a fire blanket or damp cloth, LEAVE IT ALONE. Don't take any risks - get everyone out of your home and call the Fire Brigade by DIALLING 999.
