Firefighters Raise Money For Charity In “run Up” To the New York Marathon

at 20/07/2008 08:40

Nine firefighters from across Cornwall will be participating in a Runathon on Saturday 26th July 2008 between 10am and 4pm, in the foyer at Asda, Bodmin and need the public’s support to raise much needed funds to send two firefighters to run the New York marathon for the Fire Fighters Charity (the new name for the Fire Service National Benevolent Fund).

The team, Sacha Wheatman (Brigade H.Q), Lee Griffin (Brigade H.Q), Stuart Parkin (Wadebridge), Paul Waters (Camborne), Nick Dowling (Bodmin), Danny O’Hagen (Padstow), Luke Hodge (Bodmin), Rob Carhart (Bodmin), and Mark Smith (Bodmin), will spend 6 hours continuously running on a treadmill while collecting cash from generous onlookers.

Sacha and Lee need to raise £1,900 each for the Fire Fighters Charity to realise their ambition of running the New York Marathon on the 2nd November 2008. This will be Lee’s first attempt at a marathon, Sacha having run the London Marathon in 2007 and 2008. A number of other fund-raising activities will be held over the next few months in order to reach their target.

Assistant Divisional Officer Sacha Wheatman said; “The team and I are all looking forward to the event and we are all hoping that we can raise enough money for this worthwhile charity. A small contribution to the cause would be extremely appreciated by myself and Lee, and all the people in need of support from the Fire Fighters Charity. We’d both also like to thank Asda Store for their support in this event and the Dragon Leisure Centre for the loan of their treadmill.”

The Fire Fighters Charity takes care of injured firefighters and their families, and more recently burns victims.

For more information or to give a donation call Sash Wheatman on 01872 322779 or Lee Griffin on 01872 323120.
