Cornwall County Fire Brigade Kicks off Sport In Redruth

at 30/07/2008 13:00

Cornwall County Fire Brigade is running a six week football coaching activity course for 5 – 16 year olds from Thursday 31st July – Thursday 4th September, 1pm-3pm at the Tolgus Field, Redruth. The course has been set up with assistance from Helping Hands, county council countryside staff, Cornwall Football Development Officer and Pennoweth Primary School.

Tim Cocks, Phoenix Project Manager for Cornwall County Fire Brigade explains, “During our work with young people through projects such as Phoenix or Supporting Community Values, we find that a large proportion of them are not involved in sports, clubs or structured activities, which is something we actively encourage. In Redruth, there is no football activity taking place so we are attempting to provide some over the summer. There has been a huge response to this project with over 60 young people already signed up.”

Not only will the project be beneficial to local children and young people, but it will also enable one of the local residents, Kimberley Thomas, to achieve her level 1 coaching certificate in order to carry the project on. Kimberley’s certificate is being paid for by Kevin Hawkes, who manages Helping Hands in Redruth. Coaches include firefighters Darren Halpin, Rob Hosking, Rob Stapleton, Mark Hooper and Mike Shilton, alongside local PCSO Dan Tildesley.

Tim adds, “To assist our delivery we are utilising many firefighters who have coaching qualifications. Our thanks go to Kevin Hawkes at Helping Hands, the local police and PCSOs, Martin Hawkings from the county council who arranged for the field to be cut, Andy Mitchell, Cornwall Football Development Officer and Pennoweth Primary School for loaning the equipment.”
