Cornwall County Fire Brigade, in partnership with Trading Standards and the Devon and Cornwall Police, has praised retailers in central Cornwall after a safety campaign for this year’s firework season.
Out of 11 retail outlets selling fireworks that were visited, only 1 sold fireworks to someone under 18 without asking for ID.
Steve Halstead of Cornwall County Fire Brigade says of the scheme, “We are delighted that retailers have responded to fireworks legislation and are being vigilant about who they serve fireworks to. Fireworks that are not handled properly can be extremely dangerous so it’s vitally important that they don’t fall into the hands of young people who may not consider the consequences of mishandling them. We targeted retailers along with Police and Trading Standards and were very pleased to see the majority committing to selling fireworks responsibly.”
The initiative focused on the fact that it is illegal for someone under the age of 18 to purchase fireworks or be in possession of them in a public place. In addition, retailers had to be registered to store fireworks with the Fire Brigade, who inspect retail outlets to ensure the storage is suitable and safe.
Peter Northey of Cornwall Trading Standards comments, “We are carrying out a number of Under Age Sales initiatives in Cornwall currently, with a view to helping to tackle anti social behaviour issues. These can relate to underage drinking, smoking or indeed something as dangerous as being in possession of fireworks. By working with retailers we hope to ensure that restricted goods don’t fall into the wrong hands and that young people can stay safe and healthy.”
Ken Yeo [Lib Dem], Executive Member for Public Protection adds, “This kind of partnership working is a good example of how we can make Cornwall a safer place to live. It is the result of the work being done by Trading Standards, the Fire Brigade and Police to ensure that retailers comply with the law.”
